On March 28th, Mike Carr, Charlie Schwitzer, and Owen Barnes played for some extra special folks at the 10th Annual Cowboys for Heroes Event at Fort Sam Houston. They volunteered their time and talents to play for military personnel and families at this free event offered by the cowboy community as a show of appreciation and to give back to the military heroes who have sacrificed so much. More than 3,000 cowboy enthusiasts and fans of hearty chuckwagon cooking took advantage of clear skies and comfortable temperatures at the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Equestrian Center. This year's Cowboys for Heroes had 18 chuckwagons serving up more than 2,200 pounds of beef and 500 pounds of beans among the mountains of free cowboy cooking on 1800s-style chuck wagons. Mike's uncle, Wayne Calk, and the American Chuck Wagon Association were out in full force. The event also included live horseback riding performances, mutton busting, family hayrides, pony rides, mechanical bulls, a trick roper, photo opportunities and much more. Cowboys for Heroes takes service members and their families back in time to the days of roping, ranching and songs around a campfire. Chuckwagons for Christ donated the meat and cooking materials, while the commissary donated paper and plastic products. Mike, Charlie, and Owen were honored to play for these families and were joined at the event by Ann Lucas, Victor Zerr, and Donna Lemley. If this wasn't a nice day, I don't know what is. Thanks to Cathy McNair for the photos of the band!
